Last year on accutane, I had to take sun safety real seriously. My skin was super sensitive, and even just an hour in the sun would have me worried. Between that and some skin cancer scares in the family, the habits have stuck. I wear sunscreen daily, and have the majority of the products below in rotation all summer long.
Besides the product recommendations below, here’s a friendly reminder to either book your physical or a dermatologist appointment to get your skin checked out. Make sure they check the weird spots – like in between your toes! – where you don’t always check.
What other SPF products would you recommend?
The best everyday face sunscreen
My go to daily moisturizer is CeraVe’s Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30. I love how it feels on my face and has been a favorite since I tried it during my stint on accutane. It’s moisturizing without being greasy.
The best everyday sunscreen
Every morning when I’m out of the shower I put on Lubriderm Daily Moisture with SPF 15 lotion. It feels like a typical daily lotion and doesn’t have an SPF smell. While SPF 15 isn’t a high number, it’s better than most other daily lotions out there.
The best smelling sunscreen
I will admit – I use this one just for the smell. Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration – both in the spray and the lotion – is what I typically buy to bring to the beach. I think I got it once on a family vacation in North Carolina ten years ago and just never stopped buying it. It turns you into a sunskissed beach babe!
The best sunscreens for sun protection
Obviously all of these provide sun protection, but there are some days where you’re out longer, or for people who are even more sensitive, or even for people who maybeeee got a little burn yesterday and really don’t want it to get worst. Here I’d recommend something with Zinc. No, not the kind that turns your skin blue like in Australia (true story, I looked SO pasty from sunscreen my first weeks there) but something with invisible zinc like CeraVe’s 50 SPF Body Lotion.
The best for touch ups during the day
My friend Kate introduced me to Brush on Block’s Powder Mineral sunscreen and it now sits in my purse all summer long. It’s great for putting over makeup to apply throughout the day when you’re running errands, heading to a picnic, or at an outdoor wedding where traditional application methods are just too awkward.
The best SPF clothing
My sun safety BFF Ali introduced me to Cabana Life. They sell super cute cover ups, including breathable SPF pants! I’ve also bought gifts at Coolibar – including an SPF shawl/blanket for my stepmom for her to cover her legs sitting by the pool. A lot of people think that just because they have clothes on mean that their safe from sunscreen, but a white t shirt only has an SPF of 7!
The best SPF hat
A firmly believe the best SPF hat is the one you’ll wear. I have this Sunday Afternoons Havana Hat I bought on Amazon that I’ve had for a few years that is still in great condition!
